The Azores is an archipelago made up of 9 islands clustered in the middle of the Atlantic between the US and Europe. It also served as the best “layover” ever after spending a week in Portugal. The flight from Lisbon to the Azores was about 4 hours and after a few days exploring the island it was just another 4 hour flight to get back to the states.
The volcanoes have been dormant since they were settled and their volcanic roots set the stage for dramatic landscapes, fertile soil and beautiful black sand beaches. As we road tripped through the island we saw massive bushes of hydrangea dotting the hillside, hot springs nestled between lush mountains, and picturesque cliff-side villages.
